How a postnatal doula can help when you're exhausted
There is tired, and then there is new baby tired.
The kind of tired where you can’t remember the last time you had an uninterrupted night’s sleep. Where making a cup of tea can feel like a major achievement. Where you’re feeding your baby, settling your baby, holding your baby — and wondering when you’ll get a moment to breathe.
If you’re an exhausted new mum, you may be wondering how you’re going to keep going.
And sometimes, what you need most isn’t another piece of advice.
You just need someone to help.
You don’t have to do everything yourself
There can be an enormous amount of pressure on new parents to somehow manage everything while recovering from birth and looking after a newborn.
Visitors might ask how the baby is doing but forget to ask how you are.
A postnatal doula is there to support you, too.
My role is to provide practical, emotional and informational postpartum support, helping make those early weeks and months feel a little more manageable.
Sometimes that means doing something practical. Sometimes it means listening. Sometimes it simply means being there.
What can a postnatal doula do when you’re exhausted?
When you’re running on very little sleep, even small things can make a big difference.
A postnatal doula might:
* Make you something to eat or drink
* Hold your baby while you shower or have a rest
* Look after your baby while you catch up on some sleep
* Offer gentle newborn support
* Listen while you talk through how you’re feeling
* Offer reassurance when you’re questioning yourself
* Support you with feeding
* Help with simple things around the home
* Give you space to breathe and have a little time for yourself
* Signpost you to appropriate professional or evidence-based support when needed
It’s not about taking over.
It’s about giving you some of the support you need while you’re finding your feet.
Sometimes you just need someone to listen
The early days with a baby can bring so many emotions.
You might be completely in love with your baby and still find motherhood incredibly hard.
You might feel overwhelmed, tearful, touched out, lonely or simply exhausted.
You don’t have to make your feelings sound positive or put together.
A postnatal doula can provide a calm, non-judgemental space where you can talk honestly about how things are going.
Sometimes being able to say “I’m really struggling today” to someone who will simply listen can make things feel a little lighter.
Support after having a baby is for you too
So much of the focus after birth is understandably on the baby.
But you have been through a huge physical and emotional experience.
You deserve care, nourishment, rest, reassurance and someone checking in on you.
Support after having a baby isn’t a luxury. Feeling supported can make such a difference to how you experience those early weeks and months.
And support doesn’t have to mean that things are going badly.
You can be coping and still want another pair of hands.
You can love motherhood and still desperately need a break.
You can feel confident with your baby and still appreciate someone making you lunch while you sit down.
