3 Postpartum Experiences That Can Trigger Your Fight-or-Flight Response ✨

As a postnatal doula, I often remind new mums that your nervous system has been through a huge life transition. Sometimes what you’re feeling isn’t weakness, anxiety, or “getting it wrong”—it’s your body trying to protect you.

Here are 3 common postpartum experiences that can trigger your fight-or-flight response:

🤱 1. Hearing Your Baby Cry

Your baby’s cry is designed to get your attention, but for many mums it can feel physically overwhelming. Your heart races, your chest tightens, and you feel an urgent need to “fix” things immediately.

💛 How to cope: Pause for a moment and take a slow breath before responding. Remind yourself: “My baby is communicating with me, not testing me.” You don’t have to solve everything instantly.

🌙 2. Sleep Deprivation

When you’ve had little sleep, your nervous system becomes more sensitive. Small challenges can feel enormous, and you may feel on edge, tearful, or easily startled.

💛 How to cope: Lower expectations where possible. Prioritise rest over household tasks, accept help, and remember that survival mode is not your forever state.

👥 3. Feeling Responsible for Everything

Many new mums carry an invisible mental load—feeding, appointments, routines, safety, and a hundred other worries. The pressure can leave your body feeling constantly alert.

💛 How to cope: Share the load where you can. Talk openly with your partner, family, or support network. You were never meant to do this alone.

🌸 If any of this resonates, please know you’re not failing. Your nervous system is adapting to one of the biggest changes of your life. Be gentle with yourself. Healing, confidence, and calm all take time.

You deserve support too. 💕
